Behold the Infant
by Fr. Robert J. Pecotte
A bird’s voice
lifts at first light;
the Virgin’s face
bent over the manger,
the Christ child sleeps
above the cave
Aleppo pines sway
against the breeze...
the infant Messiah stirs
swaddled in seamless cloth
A conifer tree,
branches gnarled with age,
cracks at dawn...
Mary lifts her son
from the rough wooden trough.
