Chagall

by Patricia Wallace Jones

For Paul
Sure, he painted monsters,
images of poverty, oppression
but also lovers that flew,
soared from his dreams, dance
and music he found joyful
always with the hope
of reaching, pleasing the masses.

Dismissed by vanguards
he briefly befriended, he never
joined ranks. Critics said then,
some even now, he quite simply,
delightfully refused to behave.
